It's not as exploitative as some may think (especially considering the English title), but more Art-house. So while this is a different beast (no pun intended) than "Let the right one in" (your dreams?), this still has a similar feeling to it. Not to mention a female character in the center of it. A really good movie (coming of age and other things that is) if you like your drama spiced.

Acting wise this is great and it may need some time to get rolling, but when it does there seems to be no stopping. Many people can also identify with the main actress/character, the way she feels and is being treated. There is more than a connection (though it does stop there of course ... hopefully) and that is being exploited, if anything.

User Reviews

First off, I want to say that I hate the poster for this. The poster is the reason that I expected this to be completely different. It made it look like a Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf/Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? type of film, and since I didn't see the trailer, that's what I thought. I thought that it would be this really over-the-top, loud piece of work, and to the contrary, it's very similar in tone to Martha Marcy May Marlene, one of my favorites of this decade so far. I still definitely want to process my thoughts on it, especially because I'm not sure how great it is. I don't think the film will be without its supporters, but will it have lots of detractors? You bet, not only in the outside world but on this board as well. From the start the film puts you at a distance by making you question everything you're seeing. Everything seems off, and you don't quite know exactly how these two women ever came to be friends in the first place. This unsettling atmosphere is all that is needed to entrance you into everything that will happen in the film. But then, I'm not sure how much of it was earned. The film's greatness is something that I will need to ponder more.

What I don't need to ponder more, though, is the brilliance of Elisabeth Moss here. On TV, she's given one of my all-time favorite female performances in one of my all-time favorite series, Mad Men, so that in itself made me love her. Then last year came along, where she shined in The One I Love (funny how the setting for this and that are almost identical) and even moreso in Listen Up Philip (which left me cold and where she was easily the best, only great, thing about it). More of a fan. Now this. A very, very tricky role because there are so many different facets, but she is mesmerizing. Most of her performance and the film is silent and reflective, and unsurprisingly she excels at that. Her bigger scenes, of which there aren't many, are more surprising because I'd never seen Moss do much of that, definitely not on Mad Men. She's so eerily brilliant and painfully realistic. I thought this would be a fun performance to watch, didn't expect it to be so painful. Not because of the quality, but because this feels like a real person. The film plays in the border of surrealism and realism and still manages to be really effective.

What I don't get the hype for, though, is Katherine Waterston. She was really good in Inherent Vice, but I feel like she made a greater impact than the role required there and less of an impact than the role called for here. I couldn't help but imagine a more impactful actress in that role. She can be good, but a lot of it also comes across, I don't know, hollow? Definitely nowhere near what Moss does, even if we were to compare the first act of the film where both are equal in screen time and material.

I am so psyched to write the first user review of this great film -- soon to be widely recognized as such, I imagine. (See New Yorker, NY Times, Variety etc. reviews -- they're ahead of me.)

"Digging for Fire" looks wonderful -- magical, even. Joe Swanberg, as natural a filmmaker as Samuel Fuller (the all-time greatest of the naturals), here has (for the first time?) chosen to shoot on 35mm Eastman color film in Cinemascope ratio. And the results are stunning -- particularly the beautiful night shooting.

As the narrative subject matter of the film involves (a) a couple in a conflicted moment and (b) the chance discovery of buried human remains, I was reminded of Rossellini's "Viaggio in Italia" -- and, surprisingly, Richard Brody (in The New Yorker) references Rossellini in his enthusiastic review. The Rossellini film -- though difficult and annoying -- is also mysteriously compelling. While Swanberg's film is far more viewer-congenial (oh alright -- "audience friendly"), a similar spiritual transformation of the characters takes place in both films. But, paradoxically, more satisfyingly in Swanberg's less explicitly and far less portentously "spiritual" film.

The acting -- from the wonderful Jake Johnson to Chris Messina in his tiny role to Judith Light and Sam Elliott as Johnson's in-laws and little Jake Swanberg as an adorable 3-year old (type-casting at its best) -- is superb -- an ensemble equal to the great assemblages Robert Altman used to gather year after year.

It seems Swanberg may have quite a nice future, for which let us be grateful.

(Side note: Interesting "Digging for Fire" is released the same weekend as Peter Bogdanovich's first film in 13 years, "She's Funny That Way" -- each opening in New York on one screen only -- try that one, too -- it's much better than the reviews would have you believe.)

While yes, this is an indie picture, the timing and plot are unerringly slow and nonsensical.

The supporting cast, are awful. Not helped by your immediate disdain for their characters, while Farminga's college friends play a highly stereotypical 'white girl wasted' college students, they do not grate as much as Rosenfields, 'hipster', work colleagues. In what world, would any self-respecting, reasonable audience member watching this film believe that firstly, they resemble anything similar to a real person, let alone this aloof, "bring us another beer" cool, music, hipster adults.

While, the main protagonists are certainly in appearance alone OK for this film, they're acting is not. Farminga spends the whole film either crying, or touching her hair. I would love to know how many times she literally ran her hands through her hair in this film, but that would mean I would have to watch the film once more.

Overall, I would definitely give this film a miss, the fact that Netflix spent £1m, buying the rights to this film, show's only that they are too successful.

Don't bother to watch Magic Mike XXL . It's not worth to go to cinema, and spend 2 hrs being miserable there. You try pretty hard to find something seems a little bit interesting in the last 30 mins. You just wanna kill yourself in the rest of the movie.

I expected there's more dancing scenes or fun part. What I feel in the storyline wasn't very frequent, but irritated. I saw the first one, I don't really remember the details of it but at least I like it . The male entertainer or stripper makes the women look so cheap and dumb. Some of the scenes even make me feel sick. I'm sorry I feel that way but this movie can totally be on the worst movie list of mine.
